Embark on an epic journey from the South to North Island, with ten days of freedom to explore New Zealand’s jaw-dropping landscapes - includes all travel and a self-drive motorhome with all the necessities

Christchurch

Your adventure starts here, the largest city on New Zealand’s South Island. Spend two nights settling in and getting used to the Kiwi way of life; slow-paced and easy-going. While you’re here, be sure to visit the beautiful Botanical Gardens, home to many native NZ plants, and head to Willowbank Wildlife Reserve to see the country’s mascot, the Kiwi, up close and personal. Make sure to prepare for your upcoming journey too - stock up on anything you might need for the road and get planning your route.

Christchurch - Auckland

After two nights in Christchurch, its time to set off North - if you want. You have ten days of free time in your motorhome before you need to be in Auckland, and there’s so much to see on the way there! The Franz Josef Glacier sits across the South Island and a little further south than Christchurch, so if this is on your list, we suggest you head there first. Kahurangi National Park could be your next stop, at the top of the South Island, and if you drive through the fishing town of Havelock, be sure to stop to sample the best mussels you’ll ever taste.

Once you cross the Cook Strait from Picton to Wellington, you’ll still have the whole North Island ahead of you. Highlights here include Lake Taupo, the country’s biggest lake, Rotorua, where geysers explode from the earth and you can learn about Māori culture, the glow worm caves of Waitomo, the dense forests of the Coromandel and the tropical paradises of the far north beaches. Whatever you want to do, it’s up to you.

Auckland

Auckland is relatively large compared to the rest of the island’s settlements, but only has a population of 1.6 million, less than a fifth of the size of London. It’s relatively small size gives the city a calm and cool atmosphere, perfect for winding down after so much excitement. The Auckland Museum is the perfect place to go if you want to keep learning about the country’s history, especially Māori history, or if you’re interested in the geological legacy of the island. Hike to the top of Mount Eden for stellar views, or take a day trip down to Matamata, where the Lord of the Rings set, Hobbiton, sits proudly in the rolling hills of The Shire.

Good to know

Please note that your outbound flight will take two days, so be sure to take this into account when planning the time you'll be away.

Can't commit to booking right now?

Hold a date for only £25 while you decide.

  • Pay £25 to hold a date until the end of the sale.
  • If you choose to buy it, the money will go towards your purchase, if not, the cash will be credited to your Secret Escapes account.
