A serene stay at an eccentric harbourside hotel in Somerset, including breakfast and an award-winning gin and tonic

Perched between the shingle shores of the Bristol Channel and the rolling wilderness of the Exmoor National Park, Porlock Weir is a charming functioning harbour village and a wonderful destination for a romantic rural getaway. For centuries, Millers at the Anchor has accommodated visiting sailors and hunters and has recently been revamped by antiques aficionado and gin-producer, Martin Miller, in his own inimitable style.

Millers at the Anchor demonstrates the full breadth of its owner's extensive antiques expertise – its eclectic and intimate library, lounge, dining room and bedrooms are uniquely and individually decorated with plush furnishings, oil paintings, marble busts, gilt mirrors and antique candelabras.

It makes for a great base for exploring the South West Coastal Path and the heather-clad hills and secluded, blooming valleys of Exmoor. There are also a number of traditional British outdoor pursuits on offer locally for you to engage in. Relax with a glass of prime, homegrown gin and a splash of tonic after tranquil rambles across Exmoor National Park – could you picture a more perfect scene? This hotel bagged itself a TripAdvisor Certificate of Excellence, and there's no doubt why.

Dining

The beautiful harbour view restaurant is, like the rest of the hotel, expertly furnished. The walls are crowded with old oil paintings and its fireplace mantelpiece heavy with sculptures and chinoiserie. Expect wonderfully homely, delicious British cuisine – think full cooked breakfasts, unfussy pub-style lunches, afternoon teas and delicious a la carte dinners in atmospheric candlelight. Alfresco dining by the harbour wall is also available if the weather permits.

Please note that on Mondays and Tuesdays, the restaurant is only open for dinner. However, the adjacent pub is open for lunch and caters for guests.

Location

Exmoor National Park – the fabled countryside of Lorna Doone and home to the mysterious beast of Exmoor – is a stunning landscape grazed by red deer and miniature Exmoor ponies. It makes for some spectacular walks or bike rides – bike hire is available at the Anchor. It's also possible to go shooting here (clay or live) and hunting.

The Bristol Channel is popular with fishing enthusiasts and you can even surf at the beach directly outside the hotel – if you dare brave the cold – or head out on a three-hour Culbone Circular walk which takes in an area steeped in history.
