An eight-night out-of-this-world tour of Myanmar, taking in cultural highlights and natural wonders - including breakfast, all travel and excursions

Sunrises over temples, street food from vibrant markets and sparkling lakes spanning the size of small towns: all this and more await in the elusive Myanmar. Opening its borders in 2012, tourism has been slowly growing and the country - formerly known as Burma - has the beaches, temples, culture and food to rival its neighbour, Thailand. You’ll see highlight after highlight on this eight-night holiday, from the Shwedagon Paya Pagoda in Yangon to the ancient temples in Bagan to the still waters of Inle Lake.

You kick off with a night in Yangon, which lies in the fertile delta of southern Myanmar, on the wide Yangon river. This developing city thrives on street markets, glittering temples and wide open spaces. Spend your time taking in these sights - including Karaweik Hall, a large theatre in the shape of a golden dragon on Kandawgyi Lake, before you move on to Bagan, a place peppered with thousands of ancient temple ruins. You'll spend some time hopping between them, before watching the sunset from Sunset Hill.

You'll head to Mount Popa next, a cylindrical hill that rises from the surrounding plain and is considered to be home to Myanmar's most important spirits. After climbing the 777 steps to the top to admire the view, you'll move on to Mandalay - the former capital of royal Burma, bursting with cultural and spiritual sights.

From Mandalay, you'll take a boat excursion to Mingun, along the River Ayeyarwaddy, and you'll visit Mingun Pagoda, Mandalay's traditional handicraft workshops, the Kuthodaw Pagoda and the Golden Palace Monastery. Wind the day up enjoying the sunset from Mandalay Hill, before moving on to Inle Lake the following morning.

Take to the waters once again on a boat excursion on the vast Inle Lake to visit the intriguing floating markets, as well as In Dein village, a local school, the Alaung Sitthou area, Phaungdaw Oo Pagoda and a Cheroot Factory in Nampan village. The next day, you'll head back to Yangon for the night, where you'll spend the last afternoon of your trip on a city tour which includes the awe-inspiring Shwedagon Pagoda - known as the 'Golden Pagoda' and one of the wonders of the world.
