A relaxing Lake District stay at a 19th-century country house hotel overlooking Lake Windermere - includes full English breakfast and a welcome cream tea

It’s all fabulousness and finery at this gracious 19th-century country pile overlooking Lake Windermere - England’s glistening watery wonder that stretches for over 10 miles between Ambleside and Newby Bridge. Surrounded by 20 acres of landscaped gardens and forest, it’s just as a Lake District hotel should be: perfectly peaceful and full of character.

Built in 1812 for the second Earl of Lonsdale who held office as a Tory MP (and later Postmaster General under Sir Robert Peel), the property remained a family home until the 1980s. Nowadays, it has 20 comfortable guest rooms, all of which show a fondness for period decor by way of soft muted tones, carpeted flooring, rich fabrics, and large windows for lovely views.

A put-your-feet-up and relax vibe is prevalent throughout the house, most notably in the cosy reading rooms and silk-panelled drawing room. There’s also a superb AA Rosette-listed restaurant for ingredient-driven British fare and a wonderful Victorian bar where you can enjoy an end-of-day tumbler of single malt Scotch whisky or a glass of vintage port before bedtime.
