Separated from the mainland by the Potidea canal, Kassandra is technically an island and offers magnificent panoramic views, particularly at sunset. Lining the edge of the entire peninsula, you could pick any one of the beaches for the perfect day, basking in the sun and dipping your toes in the crystalline waters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Home to some of the most extravagant 5-star hotels and resorts in the whole of Greece, Kassandra is the ideal spot for those wanting a luxury getaway without a luxury price tag. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Consider visiting Afitos, the main local town on this spit of land, which offers delightful cobbled stone streets and old-time Grecian charm with stunning views of the sea. For a quieter day of relaxation, Toroni beach in the village of Toroni is a tranquil oasis, with just a handful of tourists to be found dotted along the beachfront. In all honesty, pick any one of the over 100 beaches on Sithonia, and you\u2019re set for a day of hedonistic escapism on the shores.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If you fancy doing something other than lounging on a beach, discover the not-so-well-kept secret of the Domaine Porto Carras \u2013 the largest vineyard in Greece. Pop by for a very reasonably priced wine tasting of these locally produced award-winning wines set against a backdrop of the Aegean in the distance. Looking for somewhere to eat? This UNESCO World Heritage site is a spiritual centre for Orthodox Christianity and is home to around 2,000 monks in 20 monasteries, preserving centuries-old traditions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It is not open to tourists; however, you can join a boat trip from Ouranoupolis and sail around Mount Athos, marvelling at the impressive Byzantine monasteries from afar. Which Halkidiki Peninsula is Best for Couples?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

If you\u2019re looking for a special getaway with your special someone, Halkidiki\u2019s peninsulas offer a romantic backdrop for unforgettable memories, quality time spent together, and delicious food. Whether you go to Kassandra or Sithonia depends entirely on personal preference and the type of holiday you\u2019d like to go on. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Planning Your Trip: When to Go & How to Get Around<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The best time to visit Halkidiki without crowds is in late May\/early June or September. These shoulder seasons offer pleasant weather for swimming and exploring, but allow you to enjoy the beaches and resorts without the significant crowds of mid-summer. Peak season (July and August) offers the warmest water, but the beaches and resorts on Kassandra will be significantly more crowded.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For maximum freedom and to truly explore the hidden coves and villages, we highly recommend driving in Halkidiki. The roads on the peninsulas, particularly Sithonia, are winding but generally well-maintained, offering breathtaking coastal views. Having a car allows you to easily hop between the different peninsulas and discover the more tranquil beaches, especially on Sithonia, that are inaccessible by public transport. Make sure to rent a car at Thessaloniki airport or upon arrival.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Beyond Halkidiki: Mainland Day Trips<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

If you\u2019re lucky enough to be visiting Halkidiki for longer than a few days, take advantage of its proximity to historic hotspots on the mainland. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Thessaloniki is known as Greece\u2019s second city and is a melting pot of ancient history, modern nightlife, art and trendy urban spaces. We highly recommend embarking on a sunset hike through Seih Sou Forest in the St Paul\u2019s District to watch the glow over the city below. With its fantastic sea views and plentiful local eateries, blending her cosmopolitan character with its glorious past, Thessaloniki is a perfect day trip or city break destination.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Stagira<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

On the mainland, you\u2019ll find a little ancient village called Stagira, which is now a spread of crumbling ruins on the eastern shore. While it might not be the most impressive of ancient sites in Greece, it is the birthplace of Aristotle, and it is now where his statue watches over his home across the Aegean \u2013 certainly worth an afternoon trip.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Petralonas Caves<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

The Petralona caves, also known as the Cave of the Red Stones, were accidentally discovered in 1959, and the following year shot to fame when a pre-human skull was found. This impressive cave of wonders offers a snapshot of ancient life, and while the stalactite and stalagmite formations are impressive, it\u2019s the fossils that leave you somewhat speechless. The proverbial jewel in the cave is without a doubt the \u2018Petralona Skull\u2019, which is estimated to be at least 700,000 years old and represents a previously unknown hominin genus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
