Spring<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Madeira is famous for more than just its fortified wine: Madeirans also produce their own rum. It is either enjoyed on its own or used to mix the island’s popular drink, Poncha<\/em>. In April, an entire festival is dedicated to it, taking place every year on Avenida Arriaga in Funchal. At the Madeira Rum Festival, you’ll have the opportunity to taste the famous Madeiran agricultural rum (Aguardente de Cana<\/em>) and learn more about its production through tastings, masterclasses, food pairings, and chats with the producers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On an island blessed by nature, flowers deserve more than a simple ode: here, the month of May is entirely dedicated to their beauty and fragrance. Don’t miss the chance to experience Madeira’s wonderful tribute to the blossom and visit the 72nd Flower Festival, celebrated from 29th April to 30th May 2027. During the festival, vibrant floral carpets stretch across the streets, complemented by the ‘Wall of Hope’, symbolised by children laying flowers. For the first time this year, there will be two impressive parades \u2013 one on 2nd May and another on 16th May \u2013 featuring around a thousand participants of all ages. They form the highlights of this fragrant festival that transforms Funchal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Summer<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Summer in Madeira is defined by local festivals and traditions celebrated anew every year. Among them is the Renaissance and Medieval Market in Machico, held over a weekend in June. Reviving the spirit of the 16th century, it commemorates the era of the island’s discovery. In close cooperation with local schools, Machico’s town centre is transformed into a lively stage for historical music and cultural performances, allowing visitors to immerse themselves deep into history.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The month of June also sees the Atlantic Festival in Funchal, a dazzling spectacle featuring several highlights: the International Fireworks Competition promises a blend of music and an impressive pyrotechnic display on the first three Saturdays of June, lighting up the sky over Funchal Bay. Whilst participants compete for a specialist jury’s prestigious ‘Atlantic Trophy’, the audience also gets a vote: the ‘Madeira Belongs to All’ public choice award is presented to the most impressive display. In addition, a diverse cultural programme entertains guests \u2013 ranging from spectacular musical productions to circus acrobatics, modern multimedia shows, and operas at Fortaleza do Pico.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sea Week in Porto Moniz ranks among the island’s most popular summer festivals. During the festivities in July, the town becomes a vibrant hub for music, local culture, excellent gastronomy, and various water sports. This beloved festival delights visitors with a colourful line-up of games and events right at the harbour and the spectacular natural pools. In the evening, the charming lanes of the village centre invite you to dive into Madeira’s culinary variety at live concerts and enjoy regional specialities from traditional stalls. In 2027, the event takes place from 26th July to 1st August.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At the beginning of September, Estreito de C\u00e2mara de Lobos, located around 13 kilometres west of Funchal, becomes the absolute hub for wine lovers and tradition enthusiasts: during the grape harvest festival, colourful folklore groups parade through the streets for the ceremonial grape gathering before the communal grape-treading begins \u2013 a lively spectacle accompanied by infectious rhythms and authentic Madeiran flavours. For true oenophiles, the Madeira Wine Festival, takes place from 22 August to 12 September 2027 and is not to be missed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Autumn<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

As the seasons change and the summer heat fades, Madeira welcomes you to enjoy their annual Nature Festival, which takes place in from 5-10th October 2027. Then, from 7-9th November, Funchal and Calheta transform into a colourful backdrop for creative expression during the Madeira Street Art Festival. Regional talents and international big names in street art join circus performers for a lively open-air event. A special attraction is the Madeira Street Battle \u2013 an energetic breakdancing competition uniting local and international dancers on stage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Winter<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Funchal’s eight-minute New Year’s Eve fireworks display is a true spectacle. Fired into the archipelago’s night sky from 58 separate stations across the amphitheatre, Cais 8, and Praia Almirante Reis, the extraordinary scale of this show has achieved global renown: in 2006, it earned official recognition from the Guinness World Records as the “world’s largest fireworks display”. The display is further enhanced by five offshore platforms and two stations on the neighbouring island of Porto Santo.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On the penultimate weekend of January, people gather in Seixal for the annual Panelo<\/em> Festival. It is considered a highlight among food festivals celebrating the island’s traditional rustic cuisine. Panelo<\/em> is a hearty dish made with vegetables and sausages, popular with many during the winter months. Celebrations take place on the first Sunday following St Anthony’s Day in Ch\u00e3o da Ribeira Park.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Much like in many European regions, Carnival holds a firm spot on Madeira’s festival calendar: throughout February, the entire island celebrates with fancy dress and dancing. Highlights include the grand Samba Parade in Funchal \u2013 a true spectacle of light, colour, and music attracting thousands of spectators \u2013 and the satirical Cortejo Trapalh\u00e3o<\/em> on Shrove Tuesday. In 2027, Carnival runs from 3rd to 14th February.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
