Who says you have to travel as far as the Caribbean for crystal-clear waters and breathtaking beaches? Northern Greece is often overlooked as a travel destination in favour of the popular southern islands, but this should absolutely not be the case. You can find a more authentic and relaxing experience in the region of Halkidiki in comparison to Greece’s southern sun traps. Discover our secret guide to Halkidiki and get ready to experience your next Greek holiday to the fullest.

Where is Halkidiki?
Perched in northern Greece, just below Thessaloniki, Halkidiki is a rich blend of paradisiacal white beaches, crystal blue waters, and wild natural beauty replete with history. Though not an island, the northern peninsula offers coastlines and scenery associated with Greek islands. It boasts stunning sandy beaches along its coast, like Stratoni Beach and Nea Moudania Beach.
The region is best known for its three peninsulas, Kassandra, Sithonia, and Mount Athos, which resemble a trident jutting out into the Aegean Sea. It is a beautiful location for versatile getaways, from family retreats to couples’ escapes, or even backpacking trips for nature lovers.
The Peninsulas

Kassandra
The first and most visited peninsula that juts off the mainland, Kassandra, is a wildly popular tourist spot with sublime beaches and a vibrant nightlife. Separated from the mainland by the Potidea canal, Kassandra is technically an island and offers magnificent panoramic views, particularly at sunset. Lining the edge of the entire peninsula, you could pick any one of the beaches for the perfect day, basking in the sun and dipping your toes in the crystalline waters.
Home to some of the most extravagant 5-star hotels and resorts in the whole of Greece, Kassandra is the ideal spot for those wanting a luxury getaway without a luxury price tag.
Consider visiting Afitos, the main local town on this spit of land, which offers delightful cobbled stone streets and old-time Grecian charm with stunning views of the sea. Don’t forget to treat yourself to a local gyros lunch as you walk around this quaint town, taking in the sights.
Sithonia
When nothing but nature will suffice, then the Sithonia peninsula is where you should go. Its lush and rugged Mediterranean landscape leads you down winding paths and through thick forests onto vast beaches that tumble into the Aegean Sea. It’s an incredible destination for people who like to explore nature trails and find the best hidden beaches on offer.
One of the most jaw-dropping we’ve seen is Portokali beach, located on the east coast, which promises golden powder sand and turquoise waves. For a quieter day of relaxation, Toroni beach in the village of Toroni is a tranquil oasis, with just a handful of tourists to be found dotted along the beachfront. In all honesty, pick any one of the over 100 beaches on Sithonia, and you’re set for a day of hedonistic escapism on the shores.

If you fancy doing something other than lounging on a beach, discover the not-so-well-kept secret of the Domaine Porto Carras – the largest vineyard in Greece. Pop by for a very reasonably priced wine tasting of these locally produced award-winning wines set against a backdrop of the Aegean in the distance. Looking for somewhere to eat? Look no further than award-winning seafood restaurant Ta Kymata in the Neos Marmaras harbour, where the region’s freshest seafood is served on tables that are literally lapped by the waves.

Mount Athos
Mount Athos, or the Holy Mountain, is the total antithesis to the hectic holidaying vibes of its siblings, dedicated instead to quiet, contemplative monastic life. This UNESCO World Heritage site is a spiritual centre for Orthodox Christianity and is home to around 2,000 monks in 20 monasteries, preserving centuries-old traditions.
It is not open to tourists; however, you can join a boat trip from Ouranoupolis and sail around Mount Athos, marvelling at the impressive Byzantine monasteries from afar. If you’re male and want to embark on a spiritual journey into the monastery, you may be able to do so, having submitted a request up to 6 months before your visit.

Which Halkidiki Peninsula is Best for Couples?
If you’re looking for a special getaway with your special someone, Halkidiki’s peninsulas offer a romantic backdrop for unforgettable memories, quality time spent together, and delicious food. Whether you go to Kassandra or Sithonia depends entirely on personal preference and the type of holiday you’d like to go on.
For sunlit lunches, tranquil nature landscapes, and slow walks along pine-fringed beaches, Sithonia is your top choice. Bask in the serenity of this beautiful region and visit must-see spots, like Vourvourou Beach, the town of Neos Marmaras with its mouthwatering seafood grills, and the old village charm of Nikiti.
Kassandra is a better destination for couples wanting a healthy mix of picturesque beaches, charming old towns, and a vibrant nightlife. The most developed of the three peninsulas, Kassandra offers bustling resorts, more entertainment options, and fine dining experiences. Enjoy a candlelit dinner on the breathtaking coast of Afitos, head to Sani for a memorable 5-star experience, and go bar-hopping in Pefkohori or Hanioti.
Whichever peninsula you choose, you’ll be sure to make lasting memories.
Planning Your Trip: When to Go & How to Get Around
The best time to visit Halkidiki without crowds is in late May/early June or September. These shoulder seasons offer pleasant weather for swimming and exploring, but allow you to enjoy the beaches and resorts without the significant crowds of mid-summer. Peak season (July and August) offers the warmest water, but the beaches and resorts on Kassandra will be significantly more crowded.
For maximum freedom and to truly explore the hidden coves and villages, we highly recommend driving in Halkidiki. The roads on the peninsulas, particularly Sithonia, are winding but generally well-maintained, offering breathtaking coastal views. Having a car allows you to easily hop between the different peninsulas and discover the more tranquil beaches, especially on Sithonia, that are inaccessible by public transport. Make sure to rent a car at Thessaloniki airport or upon arrival.
Beyond Halkidiki: Mainland Day Trips
If you’re lucky enough to be visiting Halkidiki for longer than a few days, take advantage of its proximity to historic hotspots on the mainland.

Thessaloniki
Thessaloniki is known as Greece’s second city and is a melting pot of ancient history, modern nightlife, art and trendy urban spaces. Home to some impressive Byzantine monasteries, it’s a true tale of two cities. We highly recommend embarking on a sunset hike through Seih Sou Forest in the St Paul’s District to watch the glow over the city below. With its fantastic sea views and plentiful local eateries, blending her cosmopolitan character with its glorious past, Thessaloniki is a perfect day trip or city break destination.
Stagira
On the mainland, you’ll find a little ancient village called Stagira, which is now a spread of crumbling ruins on the eastern shore. While it might not be the most impressive of ancient sites in Greece, it is the birthplace of Aristotle, and it is now where his statue watches over his home across the Aegean – certainly worth an afternoon trip.

Petralonas Caves
The Petralona caves, also known as the Cave of the Red Stones, were accidentally discovered in 1959, and the following year shot to fame when a pre-human skull was found. This impressive cave of wonders offers a snapshot of ancient life, and while the stalactite and stalagmite formations are impressive, it’s the fossils that leave you somewhat speechless. The proverbial jewel in the cave is without a doubt the ‘Petralona Skull’, which is estimated to be at least 700,000 years old and represents a previously unknown hominin genus.
