A romantic villa amid the peace and quiet of Pyrgos, a UNESCO-listed village in the heart of Santorini – includes transfers, breakfast and welcome treats

Most visitors to Santorini choose to stay on the caldera rim overlooking the sea, or close to the island’s east coast beaches. Here the tiny streets are thronged with visitors keen to catch a glimpse of the famous Santorini sunsets as the sky burns a fiery red and the sun slips into the sea. But stray inland and you’ll discover a quieter side to the island, where you’ll never have to jostle for space and can still enjoy stunning views of the Aegean Sea.

Perched on a high piece of land in the heart of Pyrgos, a pretty UNESCO-listed village in the centre of the island, Kastro Mansion peers down over Santorini and the sparkling waters of the east coast. One of five former ancient watchtowers, the mansion has been transformed into a luxury boutique hotel with just four beautiful suites, each reimagined in the traditional Cycladic style.

Your friendly host will bring breakfast to your suite each morning and you can shop at the local markets for juicy tomatoes and fresh feta to make home-made salads in your kitchen. Head to the villages of Imerovigli or Oia for a night out and enjoy sunset from a different angle, or ask for a sightseeing tour or wine tasting to get to know a deeper side to Santorini. Pyrgos is famous for its vineyards, so wine lovers are perfectly placed for sampling wines made from the island’s unusual basket-shaped vines. The beaches are just short drive away, where you can relax on volcanic black sands and take a dip in the refreshing crystal clear waters.

Most visitors to Santorini choose to stay on the caldera rim overlooking the sea, or close to the island’s east coast beaches. But stray inland and you’ll discover a quieter side to the island, where you’ll never have to jostle for space and can still enjoy stunning views of the Aegean Sea.

You can’t miss the ‘little castle’, built into the foundations of the UNESCO-listed medieval village of Pyrgos in the very heart of the island of Santorini. There are plenty of tavernas, bars and shops in the village but as Santorini is such a small island, it’s a short drive to most of the island’s best-loved sights.
