Day 1: Delhi

Arrive in Delhi, where you'll be met at the airport and transferred to your hotel to check in. Spend the rest of the day at leisure. (Meals: in-flight)

Day 2: Delhi

Take a city tour of Old and New Delhi; drive past the magnificent Red Fort (closed on Mondays), visit Raj Ghat and beetle around Chandini Chowk in a cycle rickshaw. In New Delhi the Presidential Palace awaits, the Rashtrapati, the Rajpath WW1 memorial arch, India Gate and the 72-metre-hight Qutub Minar. Overnight in Delhi. (Meals: breakfast)

Day 3: Delhi - Agra

Drive to Agra and check in to your hotel. Proceed on a sightseeing tour of Agra; visit the impressive red sandstone battlements of Agra Fort and the iconic Taj Mahal (closed on Fridays). (Meals: breakfast)

Day 4: Agra - Dhulagarh

Today you'll head into the Rajasthani countryside, taking in the ghost city of Fatehpur Sikri, and Abhaneri Step wall (one of the largest step walls in the world) en route. Arrive at Dhulagarh to spend the night. (Meals: breakfast)

Day 5: Dhulagarh - Jaipur

Transfer to Jaipur to check in to your hotel. Spend the rest of the day at leisure - why not visit one of the city's colourful bazaars? (Meals: breakfast)

Day 6: Jaipur

Today you'll take a half-day excursion to Amber Fort, stopping to snap a picture or two of Hawa Mahal (Palace of the Winds) en route. You'll ascend to the honey-coloured hues of the fort itself by Jeep. In the afternoon, take a city tour of Jaipur, visiting Jai Singh's Observatory and the City Palace. (Meals: breakfast)

Day 7: Jaipur - Delhi

Transfer back to Delhi, where you'll check in to your hotel and spend the rest of the day at leisure. (Meals: breakfast)

Day 8: Delhi - Shimla

Today, you'll either fly home (seven-night option) or head on to Shimla (11-night option). In Shimla, a three-night stay in the capital city of the Indian state of Himachal awaits. Set in a mountain ridge in the Himalayan foothills, that's flanked by forested hillsides, it's a particularly picturesque place. (Meals: breakfast)

Days 9-10: Shimla

Take a full-day tour, including the main promenade (The Mall), the Vice Regal Lodge (closed on Mondays), Christ Church and the Himachal Museum. The next day, transfer to Shimla Railway Station for a toy train ride on the Kalka-Shimla Railway, a narrow line taking you through a scenic, mostly-mountainous route (board the 52456 Himalayan Queen at 10.40am en route for Solan, arrive in Solan at 1.16pm and transfer back to Shimla). Spend the rest of the day at leisure back in Shimla. (Meals: breakfast)

Day 11: Shimla - Delhi

Take a morning drive to Chandigarh (approximately four hours) and board the 12012 New Delhi Shatabdi Express train from here back to Delhi, where you'll check into your hotel and spend the rest of the day at leisure. (Meals: breakfast)

Day 12: Delhi - UK

Transfer to the airport to catch your flight home. (Meals: breakfast)
