A once-in-a-lifetime tour of culture-rich Peru that uncovers the mysteries of the Incas, with visits to Lake Titicaca and Machu Picchu – includes all travel and much more

Soak up the 5,000-year history of the Incas with an epic adventure across Peru, from the colonial capital city and remote islands housing traditional communities to the archaeological capital of the Americas - the mighty Machu Picchu - and deep into the age-old Amazon rainforest.

First stop: the colonial-cool capital of Lima. Unfurling from the craggy cliff-flanked coastline, the sprawling city is glorious in all its chaotic charm, where modern high-rises rub shoulders with pre-Columbian temples and candy-coloured colonial gems. During your stay, embark on a city tour to visit the city’s clutch of art-rich galleries and insightful museums, then opt to spend your evening feasting on plates of ceviche washed down with punchy pisco sours.

Move onto UNESCO World Heritage Site and colonial gem Arequipa, where you can choose to go on a city tour and visit Santa Catarina Convent. Travel onwards to Chivay on a picturesque bus journey, admiring the dramatic Colca Valley landscape along the way, and visit Cruz del Condor - the best viewpoint to watch the famous giant Andean condor take to the skies.

Travel to Puno beside magical Lake Titicaca and go on a colourful and culture-rich excursion to intriguing Taquile – a tiny speck cast adrift from mainland Peru – and the floating Uros Islands, set in the midst of the world’s highest lake. Cusco is next on the agenda, passing beautiful 17th-century churches, crumbling ruins and picturesque viewpoints en route to the former Inca capital. You'll go on a city tour and visit spellbinding Incan sites the next morning, from the ancient ruins in Sacsayhuaman to the shrine of Qenqo and the most sacred site throughout the Incan Empire - Koricancha, Temple of the Sun.

The next day you'll head into the spectacular Sacred Valley, perusing alpaca textiles and handicrafts in Pisac market on the way and visiting the village of Ollantaytambo – a typical example of an Incan settlement in the Sacred Valley of the Incas. After a good night’s sleep, you’ll hop aboard an expedition train to trundle towards your next destination: the awe-inspiring Machu Picchu. Here, you can marvel at the mysterious ruins of the 550-year-old Inca citadel presiding proudly over the Sacred Valley, against a dramatic backdrop of forest-cloaked Andes Mountains.

It’s then back to Cusco to take a flight to Puerto Maldonado, continuing into the deep, lush and enticing Amazon for your final stretch of this adventure. While at your jungle lodge, Posada Amazonas, you'll marvel at myriad parrots and parakeets preening themselves among the foliage, you'll gaze down from a lofty canopy above the treetops and you'll discover which medicines can be made from the surrounding greenery, among other fascinating experiences.
