A stately 18th-century villa stay near Italy’s UNESCO-listed city of Vicenza, including breakfast, welcome extras and an a la carte dinner option for longer stays

Though lesser-known than its glamorous neighbour Venice, UNESCO-listed Vicenza – one of Italy's wealthiest cities after Turin and Milan – manages to pack in plenty of superb museums, galleries, gourmet restaurants and designer boutiques. And the buildings aren’t bad either, thanks to its famous son, Andrea Palladio, who gave his name to an entire style of architecture.

So it’s easy to see why the all-white, 18th-century Hotel Villa Michelangelo in the nearby town of Arcugnano is such a stylish pick for luxury-lovers. Overlooking the Colli Berici hills and snow-capped Prealps, the look in each of the rooms and suites is rustic-chic – think beamed ceilings, polished Venetian floors or fine carpets, marble-clad bathrooms, and ample home-from-home comforts. There are also stunning gardens filled with lemon trees, as well as a gorgeous outdoor pool for sunny days.

But the pièce de résistance is La Loggia – the signature dining spot spread across four supremely elegant rooms that showcases exquisitely-crafted Venetian cuisine courtesy of culinary wizard Nicola Negretto. Equally noteworthy is the lovely Bar La Loggia that’s just perfect for light bites, champagne, made-to-order cocktails and delicious dessert wines.

The much larger Deluxe room is finished to a similar spec, but has a separate bedroom and living area. Both room types have large shuttered windows for sublime views of the Colli Berici hills or the snow-capped Prealps.

Dining

Prepare for a culinary adventure at La Loggia, the grand-looking signature dining spot that’s spread across four elegant rooms. Open daily for breakfast from 7am to 10am, lunch from 12:30pm to 2:30pm, and dinner from 8pm to 10pm, Chef Nicola Negretto’s exquisitely-crafted menu showcases classic Venetian dishes created with locally-sourced and seasonal ingredients. There’s also a beautiful terrace overlooking the grounds for alfresco dining when it’s sunny, as well as the lovely Bar La Loggia that serves aperitifs, fine wines, champagne, and made-to-order cocktails.

Location

You’ll be staying just under four miles from Vicenza, North Italy's UNESCO-listed city that’s celebrated for its neoclassical architecture, superb art galleries, fabulous food scene, designer shopping, and stunning buildings designed by 16th-century architect Andrea Palladio. Must-dos include marvelling at the works of esteemed local artist Jacopo Bassano and his sons Francesco and Leandro at Palazzo Chiericati, visiting the Gothic Church of Santa Corona to see grandiose paintings by Giovanni Bellini and Paolo Veronese, and spending time at the Palladio-designed Teatro Olimpico – the oldest surviving Renaissance theatre in the world.

Further city thrills include hiking to the hilltop Monte Berico for knockout views, relaxing in the drop-dead-gorgeous Parco Querini, and shopping for chic clothes and expensive shoes along Corso Andrea Palladio. Hotel Villa Michelangelo is an hour’s drive from Venice Marco Polo Airport.
