Ruins of Salona

An uber-cool hotel close to the ancient Roman city of Salona and historic Split – includes breakfast, return beach or Split town transfers and a three-course lunch on one day

When The Sunday Times describes a property as “one of the 30 coolest hotels in Croatia”, you can rest assured that you’ve made a clever choice. Opening its doors last year, Hotel Salona Palace ticks all the boxes for an idyllic stay; not least because it’s right next to the ancient Roman city of Salona – the swathe of land dotted with 2,000-year-old stone ruins and precincts walked by Julius Caesar. Complete with decor that takes an experimental spin on minimal-chic, features include lashings of grey hues and sleek furnishings, all perfected with plenty of mod cons.

Days here can be spent blissing out in the spa, feasting on classic Croatian cuisine at the signature restaurant, and sipping your way through the cocktail menu at the hotel’s bar on Kasjuni Beach. Equally worthwhile is visiting nearby Split to marvel at the UNESCO-listed Diocletian's Palace, shop at the buzzy markets and people-watch at the terrace cafes on the Riva seafront promenade that runs the length of the old town.

You’ll be staying in the peaceful town of Solin, the gateway to Croatia’s ancient Roman city of Salona – the swathe of land famously dotted with 2,000 year-old stone ruins. Once you’d had your fix of ancient relics at this archaeological gem (including marvelling at the mighty Klis Fortress that was a Game of Thrones filming location), be sure to spend time in nearby Split – one of the Med’s most compelling cities and the second-largest in Croatia.

Must-dos here include visiting the UNESCO-listed, white-stoned Diocletian's Palace, strolling along the seaside promenade, swinging by the interesting museums and art galleries, hiking up Marjan hill and chilling out on the beach. Should time allow, it’s worth venturing to Brac Island for the stunning white pebble beach that is Zlatni Rat (Golden Horn) and Hvar Island for its beautiful lavender fields.
