Within reach of wine, ruins, lakes and historic cities, this restful stay with a traditional restaurant is a great alternative to Lake Garda or Verona – with breakfast or half board

When most people choose to stay in the Veneto region of Italy they head to Venice’s lagoon, or the east coast of beautiful Lake Garda. Here they find sights aplenty but with it a mass of tourists: avoid the crowds and stay off the beaten track to experience the ‘real Italy’ for yourself. The interior of the region is often overlooked in favour of its ‘big hitting’ sights, which is a crying shame; the Veneto is the largest producer of wine, and is home to a varied topography of lakes, coast and mountains, and is beautifully undiscovered outside of its major cities.

Escape to the small, historic town of Valeggio sul Mincio to experience true hospitality and delicious regional cuisine at its finest at Hotel e Locanda La Bastia. Rustic rooms provide a welcoming place to stay after days exploring, while the restaurant serves up an impressive selection of specialities from the Veneto – one particular favourite, the ‘nodo d’amore’ is a famous tortellini pasta made from a secret, ancient recipe that translates as ‘the lovers’ knot’. Enjoy drinks on the terrace with views of the town’s castle, and wondering the quiet streets in search of more authentic restaurants.

The hotel is a fantastic base for exploring Veneto and neighbouring Lombardy, and hiring a car is the best way to get around. Drive around the southern reaches of Lake Garda to explore captivating Sirmione or motor alongside the lake to colourful Malcesine and discover the towns of the east shore. Bring Romeo and Juliet to life in fair Verona, where you can gaze up at Juliet’s beautiful balcony, or follow one of the wine routes through the region to sample some of the area’s finest wines. The Wine Route of Valpolicella wends through the oldest wine-producing cellars of the area, taking in the famous ‘classicos’, while other notable trails track east into Prosecco country.
