Hip Lisbon stay in an award-winning building by architect Adães Bermudes, including breakfast

A uniquely cool capital, Lisbon’s recent riverside development sits alongside undiminished traditions putting this European capital at the top of traveller's wishlists. It glows with a surreal light that is diffused and reflected around its seven hills by the Tagus river and the city’s limestone-tiled streets. It is a beguiling blend of sun-bleached, time-worn charm and a bursting, contemporary cultural scene. Magnificent monasteries and Moorish castles sit alongside modern museums and art galleries, whilst a lively shopping scene and a vibrant nightlife complete the urban tableau. All this is veined with tramways, cobbled lanes and tree-lined streets, making for a truly captivating stay.

Hotel 1908 sits within walking distance of all this in the corner of the Almirante Reis Avenue (the address of Cervejaria Ramiro) and Intendente Square (home of hip-casual hang-out Casa Independente) in downtown Lisbon. This area has gone through the most notable transformation in recent years and the hotel seamlessly meshes old and new. Having been only recently renovated, original Art Nouveau features are offset by chic modern amenities and carefully chosen vintage-inspired items throughout the spacious bedrooms. Boasting an ever-evolving art gallery of up-and-coming artists, Hotel 1908 also offers a relaxed bar to enjoy a post-sightseeing cocktail and Infame Restaurant for Chef Nuno Bandeira de Lima’s Portuguese-fusion cuisine.

Dining

Lisbon’s illustrious history as the starting point for intrepid explorers is nicely nodded to by Chef Nuno Bandeira de Lima’s a la carte menu, which fuses well-loved Portuguese dishes with Indian and Oriental flavours. The Infame Restaurant offers pared back, casual dining and is popular with both guests and locals alike. Example dishes include octopus salad and rice with Japanese eggplant, Pak Choi and miso.

Location

The Almirante Reis Avenue leads to the city’s historic, pedestrianised centre of Rossio – rebuilt after the devastating earthquake of 1755 – and Baixa Chiado. In this area, you’ll find hole-in-the-wall Ginjinha bars (the sour cherry liqueur of choice for Lisboeta’s), Art Nouveau cafes, the Chiado Museum of Contemporary Art and shopping aplenty. Take some time to explore the old neighbourhood of Alfama through its puzzle of interconnecting streets and for views, Lisbon boasts a handful of amazing Miradouro’s that are well worth their climbs. Take a tram out of town to gorge on modern art at the superb Berardo Museum – free to visit – or the new MAAT in Belém. Here you’ll also find Pastéis de Belém and a long queue for custard tarts but also try them from Manteigaria in central Lisbon. From the hotel, the Intendente Metro Station is 2-minute walk away and Lisbon International Airport is 3 miles away and easily accessible by public transport.
