A Scottish country house hotel dating back to the 13th century, counting poet Robert Burns amongst its guests - breakfast and two-course dinner included

Stretching across 45 acres of country woodlands on the banks of River Nith, Friars Carse Hotel in the Scottish Borders has a long history that dates all the way back to the 13th century. Once upon a time, it was a popular haunt of Robert Burns, who lived nearby and actually wrote “Auld Lang Syne” on the premises - it’s little wonder the hotel hosts a popular Burns dinner celebrating the poet each January.

Each of the hotel’s 21 en-suite guest rooms are unique, and most feature splendid views across rolling hills and farmland, down toward the river. In addition to strolling the grounds, many guests enjoy fishing the hotel’s own “beat” on the River Nith, which offers 1.5 miles of private salmon, sea trout, and grayling fishing. Afterwards, retire for a dram in the cosy lounge, take in a meal at Whistle Restaurant (where nearly everything is locally sourced), or set up a game of snooker. It’s the ideal spot for anyone who fancies a leisurely, and certainly historic, break in a beautiful outdoor setting.
