A guided four-night tour of Santa’s stomping ground, with an igloo stay, reindeer sled driving, an Icehotel visit and much more – includes flights

Your adventure begins in Rovaniemi, the capital of Lapland and launching point for adventures into the tundra. A place of extremes, with near-total darkness in the winter and midnight sun in the summer, this is nevertheless a region of extraordinary beauty. You’ll spend three nights at Cumulus Pohjanhovi, the city’s oldest hotel, where you can sample sautéed reindeer and try your hand at karaoke.

Having settled into your hotel you’ll jump straight in to the magic of Lapland with a visit to the Santa Claus Village, a great place to pick up a festive souvenir, before a reindeer sled ride and a hot drink around the fire. You’ll also experience the region’s favoured mode of transport – the husky – visiting their home on a farm and enjoying a snow safari led by the dogs and an experienced musher. Next, you’ll pay a visit to the world’s northernmost zoo, home to wolverines, arctic fox, and the mighty polar bear.

In the midst of all the animal adventures, don’t forget to get to know the human inhabitants of this unique region. The indigenous Sami people have eked a living from this unforgiving landscape for millennia; learn about their history at the fascinating Arktikum museum. Alternatively, set off on a snowmobile to explore the icy wastes, or enjoy the view somewhat more serenely with a walk along the banks of the Ounasjoki River.

The next and final stop on your journey sees you enjoying complete immersion in the desolate beauty of the Arctic with a night’s stay in a glass igloo. The igloo village, around three hours’ scenic drive south of Rovaniemi, is a collection of beautiful glass accommodations, which are heated and comfortable but allow for panoramic views of the snow-tipped forest all around. You’ll pay a visit to the stunning Ice Hotel, which is even more at one with its environment; constructed each year in winter, it melts away to nothing when the sun begins to shine. If the weather permits, your night in the igloo village will allow for a magical end to your adventure, with a light show from the aurora borealis.
