  • Island home-from-home: Tucked along the beach front, all of Makunudu's beach bungalows are built in the traditional Maldivian style, with rustic thatched roofs and tropical greenery all around. Wash away sand and sea salt in your private garden shower, and take shaded afternoon naps on your sun lounger. The best thing? The soft sound of the waves lapping the beach as you fall asleep.

  • Food, glorious food: Open all day, Ara Iru Restaurant is a laid-back spot for buffet-style dining, fresh seafood and local delicacies, whilst the Sand Bar is your go-to for ice-cold tipples. For an extra-atmospheric stay, the resort is on-hand to arrange everything from candlelit dinners in a private treehouse to sunset champagne cruises on a dhoni boat and private lunches on a secluded sandbank.

  • Soul-soothing spa: Aavun Spa offers an excellent selection of bespoke therapies that incorporate Maldivian, Asian and European techniques.
