A German city break to Berlin and Munich, with modern hotel stays, intercity train travel and optional tours of Potsdam and opulent palaces and castles
This vibrant dual German city break not only bases you in the country's competing urban epicentres, edgy capital Berlin and plush money-making Munich, but also gives you the chance to cast your eyes over splendid palaces and city quarters in less-discovered Potsdam and Bavaria's dream-like Neuschwanstein castle and Linderhof Palace.
At your historic Berlin hotel right on Alexanderplatz, Russian agents and Friedrichstadt-Palast theatre dancers once shook hands, played poker in what was then the tallest casino in Europe and danced on the roof terrace under the stars. Today, the charm of the Golden Twenties combines with postmodern industrial chic in the spectacular lounge bar. Here, Berlin Film Festival stars sparkle and fashionistas talk shop during Fashion Week.
If you choose to, you can explore lesser-known Potsdam, an hour outside of the capital. The city tour takes you from the Dutch Quarter to the Glienicker Bridge, and onwards to the remarkably Tudor-like Cecilienhof Castle, built during the First World War and a key part of the city's UNESCO World Heritage Site. You'll also wander the ornate terraces at Frederick The Great's summer palace and Versailles-styled hideaway, aptly named Sanssouci, meaning 'carefree' in French.
You’ll then jump on a train due south to Munich, for a stay at the Holiday Inn Munich - Leuchtenbergring. These modern digs are just a 10-minute U-Bahn journey from the magnificent Marienplatz, the city's beating heart since 1158. While here, you can opt to enter the eye-popping world of the surprisingly shy 19th-century king of Bavaria, Ludwig II, on a full-day tour of his fairy-tale castle Neuschwanstein and his Versailles-inspired Linderhof Palace (tickets not included).
Seeing Germany's two most magnetic cities in one trip
Gazing over Berlin from the spectacular roof terrace of your well-located hotel
Choosing to discover Potsdam and see the striking Bavarian hillside castle of Neuschwanstein on optional tours
