A once-in-a-lifetime tour of culture-rich Peru that uncovers the mysteries of the Incas, including Lake Titicaca and Machu Picchu – includes all travel and more

Soak up the 5,000-year history of the Incas with an epic nine-night adventure across Peru, from the colonial capital city and remote islands housing traditional communities to the archaeological capital of the Americas and the mighty Machu Picchu.

First stop: the colonial-cool capital of Lima. Unfurling from the craggy cliff-flanked coastline, the sprawling city is glorious in all its chaotic charm, where modern high-rises rub shoulders with pre-Columbian temples and candy-coloured colonial gems. During your two-night stay, visit the city’s clutch of art-rich galleries and insightful museums, before feasting on plates of ceviche washed down with punchy pisco sours – just save room for the silk-smooth Amazonian chocolate.

Next up, it’s on to Puno for a two-night stay on the shores of Lake Titicaca. Here, you’ll visit Taquile – a tiny speck cast adrift from mainland Peru – swinging by Huayliano to marvel at islanders’ local crafts, before skimming across the mirror-still lake to eye the floating islands of Uros scattered throughout the nature reserve. Cusco is next on the agenda, passing beautiful 17th-century churches, crumbling ruins and picturesque viewpoints en route to the former Inca capital.

After a good night’s sleep, you’ll hop aboard an expedition train to trundle towards your next destination: the awe-inspiring Machu Picchu. Here, you can marvel at the mysterious ruins of the 550-year-old Inca citadel presiding proudly over the Sacred Valley, against a dramatic backdrop of forest-cloaked Andes Mountains.

After a one-night stay in Aguas Calientes, it’s back to Cusco for your final three nights, where a whirlwind tour will offer an insight into the rich heritage of the archaeological capital of the Americas.
