The Eden Valley is the Lake District National Park's lesser-known but equally spellbinding neighbour, and is a great way to discover some of England's most beautiful country landscapes from off the beaten track. Nevertheless, the ever-popular National Park is just 20 minutes' drive away, and the Pennines – with High-Cup-Nick and Murton Fell – are even closer.

The historic Appleby Castle, built in the 15th century, is five minutes away by car, hosting its own open-air theatre and even dramatic battle re-enactments. And for a taste of local country living, you'll find several quaint market towns  within driving distance, complete with pretty tea rooms and charming pubs.
