A fantastic self-drive break exploring the beguiling sights of West Iceland at your own pace - breakfast, car hire and more included

Iceland is a dream destination, gracing the top of many a traveller's wishlist thanks to its wealth of simply stunning natural beauty. This is a fantastical land, with natural hot springs bubbling below the surface, eye-wateringly beautiful scenery above ground, and a sky that dances with the Northern Lights when it's not basking in the midnight sun.

From the wonders of the Golden Circle to the thermal waters of the Blue Lagoon, explore all of Iceland's most fascinating sights at your own pace with this trip that includes the conveniences and comforts of car hire. You’ll pick up your vehicle at the airport and drive to Reykjavik, Europe’s most northerly capital, for a night in Fosshotel Baron. Take some time to explore this charming city before moving on to your next destination, Reykholt.

Depending on which length of stay you choose, you’ll spend one or two nights at Fosshotel Reykholt. The area is stuffed full of splendid scenery, with lava fields on the Snaefellsnes peninsula, Hraunfossar's waterfalls, the Langjökull ice cave, and Europe's most powerful hot spring, Deildartunguhver, all ripe for exploring. Meander between these marvels at your own speed before either moving on to your next destination, the region of Hella, or making your way back to Reykjavik.

If you’ve headed for Hella, you’ll spend two nights at Fosshotel Hekla, which offers views over the volcano. There’s also a hot tub on site - perfect for a little R&R after a day out exploring. Just a 25-minute drive away, you'll find Hella itself, a small town set on the shores of Ytri-Rangá river. From here, you could explore on horse back or take an off-road tour to get to know the stunning surrounds: the Skogafoss and Seljalandsfoss waterfalls are particularly dramatic sights, Dyrholaey peninsula is a rugged hotspot offering incredible sea views, the village of Vik enchants with its black-sand beach and surreal mountainous backdrop, while Skaftafell national park and the breathtaking Jökulsárlón glacial lagoon are classic bucket-list attractions spilling with splendour.

Good to know
