A traditional Lake District inn with an award-winning restaurant - includes a choice of room types, breakfast, a three-course dinner and welcome treats

Traditional, picturesque and thoroughly English, the four-star Inn on the Lake is an idyllic hotel set in the glorious surrounds of the Lake District. With the imposing Helvellyn mountain as a backdrop and the vast Lake Ullswater at the foot of the grounds, there's hardly a better spot in the country for a few days of crisp, clean air.

The Inn on the Lake boasts an enormous amount of space, not least because of its own 15 acres of beautifully tended gardens. Pink roses, neat hedgerows and chequered lawns are the setting for pitch-and-putt golf and croquet, while on the lake, you can enjoy a calm afternoon on a white sailboat - perhaps to a nearby deserted beach?

Inside the hotel, the decor is cosy and quintessentially rural England, with the mahogany Ramblers Bar serving real ales and the two AA Rosette-awarded Lake View Restaurant dishing up accomplished British cuisine. After a wholesome day of walking around, head back and relax in the hot tub and sauna, or sink into an armchair by the window with a classic read.

Standard rooms are comfortable and equipped with all the amenities you'll need for a pleasant stay. Fell View rooms are similar in style but feature particularly good views of the surrounding scenery, and the larger Lake View rooms hold a traditional four-poster bed, plenty of seating and a dining table.

Room amenities:

- Flatscreen LCD TV
- Tea and coffee facilities
- En-suite bathroom
- Gilchrist & Soames toiletries
- Direct dial telephone
- Hairdryer

The hotel features formal and informal dining options. The highly praised Lake View Restaurant has two AA Rosettes and serves refined yet comforting dishes, like confit duck ballotine, Cumbrian lamb rump and warm coconut treacle tart. Ramblers Bar serves real ales and classic pub lunches, and the Inn on the Lake's lounge is the perfect spot for afternoon tea.

There are a handful of wellness facilities to make the most of here, including a hot tub, sauna and gym - just enough to ease your muscles at the end of an outdoorsy day, or to start working off all that scrumptious, award-winning food.

On the banks of Lake Ullswater and at the foot of the Helvellyn mountain range, this is one of the most picturesque locations imaginable. Long walks will take you past waterfalls, fells, woodland, valleys and, of course, the occasional old-world pub. At reception, you can arrange to go sailing on the lake or visit nearby Lowther Castle and the local National Trust sites.
