Beautiful hotel and orange grove in Catalonia

Tancat de Codorniu is a beautiful hotel in the southernmost part of Catalonia. Just 200 metres from the beach, it is bathed in a cool sea breeze which keeps the temperature at a fresh and pleasant level throughout the summer. The hotel was built in the 19th century as the summer residence of Alfonso XII, and the property oozes a certain 'regality'.

The idyllic three-and-a-half acre estate includes hundreds of orange trees (2,500 of them, actually), two swimming pools and a number of terraces, walkways and sun traps. Inside, the hotel is all ratan furniture, muted cream tones and lazy hammocks - the perfect couples retreat or destination for a small group or family - there is also an in-house tennis court and plenty of activities on site and locally for adults and kids alike.

Then there's the food. As well as great food available in the hotel, there's also a wide array of dining options along the coast in the town of Les Cases de Alcanar, which has a great selection of seafood restaurants.
